Johan Friso of Orange-Nassau and Mabel Wisse Smit

6:46:00 PM

Prince Johan Friso of Orange-Nassau married Mabel Wisse Smit, a human rights campaigner, on April 24, 2004 in Delft, The Netherlands. Johan gave up his place as second in line to the throne to marry Smit because the Dutch government refused to give approval after Smit provided false information about a liaison she had had with a drug dealer. Scandal! Of course there was more to come 7 years later (see trivia). Few representatives of other royal families - with the exception of the groom's godfather, King Harold of Norway and his wife Queen Sonia - were among the 1,400 guests at the civil and church ceremonies.
