How to Match Your Wedding Dress and Venue

Go conservative in church and short and floaty on a beach. Learn how to match your wedding dress to your wedding venue.

Deciding on a theme for your wedding is very important and should be the first decision you make when organising your big day. A style or theme will run from your wedding dress and venue to wedding favours and hen party bags, so make sure you get it right!

Picking a wedding dress and a venue are probably the two biggest decisions to make when planning a wedding and they rely on each other more than you may think. A dress and venue must match in formality and you wouldn’t want to wear an ivory dress when there is a cream carpet.

It may seem like common sense that if you have a woodland setting you will get a muddy train and that a light chiffon will leave you freezing at a winter wedding, but have you considered the cut and fit. Always book your venue before you buy a dress in order to assure a coherent style. Here is how to match your dress to your venue:

Black Tie
If you’re holding your wedding reception in a grand ballroom, a formal hotel or a manor house then you will be required to wear a formal wedding gown. An opulent affair calls for the princess dress you have always dreamed of.

Detail is everything so choose a voluminous ball gown or a tight fitting mermaid style dress bedazzled in jewels and embellished with delicate lace. Pick luxurious fabrics such as silk and satin for comfort with added style.

Go Outside
Although outside weddings are not common in Britain, due to our unpredictable weather, you may have still decided to brave the elements. So, while you keep praying for sunshine, take a look at these ideas to help you match your dress to the great outdoors.

If you’re planning a garden wedding then opt for a loose fabric that can breathe. Stray away from structured bodies and try an A-line or trumpet silhouette. Experiment with scallops and capped sleeves for a cute feminine feel or, if you’re worried you might be cold, pick a design that would work well with a shrug.

For an easy breezy beach setting, go for casual elegance and maybe even a short dress! If you are a heel hater this may be the setting for you as you can go barefoot or wear comfy white flip flops. Buy a dress with a fitted top as a beach can be quite windy. Use this breeze to your advantage in photos with a light and airy tulle or chiffon skirt that will make beautiful dramatic shapes in the ocean breeze.

Church Weddings
Church weddings tend to be religious and more traditional so try to be more conservative in your dress. Think like Kate Middleton and cover your shoulders for a classically stylish shape.

Barn or Lakeside
Go vintage with an informal gown and wellies for a rustic dream wedding. Off-white or cream dresses can look vintage and aged which work perfectly with cotton and lace fabrics that are easy to move in. Avoid structured formal dresses as you will look out of place in this shabby chic interior.

Bridesmaid Dresses

Once you have your venue and your own dress then you may start to think about what your bridesmaids will be wearing. As with your dress, these outfits should complement the venue. You will want to stray away from brown in a church or barn wedding to avoid blending into the background, and factor in the colour of carpets and curtains in a venue. There is nothing worse than a bright orange dress in a sea blue room!
